Shelley and Keats’ lives have their parallels: both being born in England, both dying in Italy, and all within a few years of each other. But there is something strongly contrastive about them too: Keats’ best work was done in England, Shelley’s in Italy. Indeed, without his four Italian years, Shelley would be little-remembered today. This talk looks at those Italian years of Shelley, with a sidelight on other Romantics.
